CD Projekt Red has recently announced that Cyberpunk 2077 will soon be available for Mac users in the CD Projekt Red’s blog and featured briefly in Apple’s MacBook Pro announcement video.
The highly anticipated Mac release promises to utilize Apple silicon and showcase its advanced capabilities.
Cyberpunk 2077 will be available on the Mac App Store, Steam, GOG, and the Epic Game Store as Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition.
This edition includes the Phantom Liberty expansion, which was released a couple of years after the original game.
Launched in 2020, Cyberpunk 2077 faced initial challenges, particularly on low-end PCs.
Later the game released subsequent patches and significant updates, including the Phantom Liberty expansion, and overcame the difficulties. The version of Cyberpunk 2077 that Mac users will receive includes all these improvements.
The addition of Cyberpunk 2077 is notable as it required high-end hardware and technologies like ray-traced illumination, reflections, and shadows.
The game also relies on the latest AI upscaling technologies like DLSS or FSR to be playable on even high-end machines.
The blog post from CD Projekt Red highlights that this version of Cyberpunk 2077, will not be available on older Intel Macs.
It will fully leverage Apple silicon and the advanced technologies of Apple’s graphics API, Metal. MetalFX, an upscaling technique similar to DLSS or FSR, is expected to enhance the gaming experience.
Although Apple’s efforts to bring games like Cyberpunk 2077 to the platform seem like technical demos to showcase the potential of Apple silicon, the inclusion of such a high-demand game is a significant step.
The endeavor aims towards Apple’s commitment to expanding its gaming ecosystem. However, bringing the Mac closer to par with the PC, PlayStation 5, or Xbox Series X|S will require more than a handful of games.
