Google is rolling out a bunch of updates for Gmail users on both Android and iOS devices. These updates focus on improving the design, making the app more flexible, and bringing powerful AI features right into your inbox.
For people using Android tablets or foldable phones, the Gmail app is now much easier to customize. In landscape mode, you’ll see a slider between your list of emails and the email you’re reading.
You can drag this slider left or right to make either side bigger or smaller, depending on what you want to focus on. If you prefer, you can even slide it all the way over to one side and just use one panel — either just your list of emails or the full email conversation. This new flexible design is available now for both Workspace (business) accounts and regular personal Gmail accounts.
Meanwhile, iPhone users are getting a big visual upgrade. Google is bringing “Material Design 3” to Gmail on iOS, which matches how the app looks on Android and the web.
This includes a rounded search bar at the top, and new pill-shaped buttons along the bottom of the screen, making everything feel cleaner and more modern. Like the Android update, this new design is being rolled out now to all Gmail users, whether you’re using it for work or personal emails.
There’s also a small but handy update for Google Calendar on iPhone – now you can create and edit birthday events directly from the app — just like Android users have been able to do for a while.
Finally, a big AI-powered feature is coming to Gmail’s mobile apps. Google’s Gemini image generator will now be available in the Gmail sidebar for Workspace users (on both Android and iOS). This means you can create images using AI without leaving the app.
Once you generate an image, you can save it, copy it, or insert it directly into an email you’re writing — making it faster and easier to add custom visuals to your messages.
