Google Rolls Out Gemini-Boosted Assistant to Select Nest Speakers

    Posted in

Google is rolling out its Gemini-powered Google Assistant on select Nest speakers.

This new feature is now available to some Google Home users and is expected to deliver smarter, more comprehensive answers to all your general knowledge questions.

Starting with Nest Audio and Nest Mini (2nd gen) smart speakers, the Gemini-enhanced Assistant offers more detail and in-depth responses to the prompts.

Along with this, it will still manage tasks like smart home controls and music requests, but users will notice a chime signaling whenever any AI-powered response comes from Gemini.

According to a support document from Google, this new functionality allows for follow-up questions and interruptions during responses, although you’ll still need to begin each query with “Hey Google.”

This enhancement is currently limited to those in Google Home’s Public Preview, who are also Nest Aware subscribers and have opted into Experimental AI features. However, access to these features is not yet available to everyone in the Preview.

First reported by 9to5Google, the Gemini-enhanced Assistant began appearing on speakers earlier this month. Users selected for the Experimental AI features will receive a notification in their Google Home App inbox, enabling them to toggle on the new AI capabilities.

In addition to answering questions, Gemini-powered features include camera search and descriptions to filter Nest security camera footage and a “Help me create” feature that lets users set up Google Home routines with just a few words.

While this rollout is currently limited, Google has become the first major tech company to publicly launch generative AI-powered features on its voice assistant for smart homes.

Despite Amazon’s announcements last year about a smarter Alexa, no delivery has yet occurred, and Apple remains silent on any advancements with Siri.
Stay tuned for more updates as Google continues to enhance its smart home offerings with AI innovations.
