Google has recently announced that it would discontinue its goo.gl URL shortening service on August 25, 2025.
Starting on August 23, 2024, the goo.gl links will display an interstitial page that notifies users that “This link will no longer work shortly” before they can navigate to the original target page.
The percentage of links that will redirect to the interstitial page will increase until August 25, 2025.
After August 25, all goo.gl links in the form https://goo.gl/* will no longer respond and can display a “404 error” instead.
Google advises developers to update the impacted Google links and transition away from using goo.gl short links as soon as possible. This is because the interstitial page can cause disruptions in the current flow of links.
If other redirects are used, the interstitial page may prevent the redirecting correctly.
If any social metadata is embedded in the destination page, the interstitial page will likely cause these to no longer appear where the initial link is displayed.
Google has ensured that Firebase support is provided for any further queries.
In 2018, Google announced the deprecation of goo.gl and encouraged developers to migrate to Firebase Dynamic Links (FDL).
However, FDL has also since been deprecated, leaving developers needing a direct replacement from Google for URL shortening.
