Qualcomm has introduced Snapdragon 8 Elite – the company’s latest high-end smartphone SoC.

This new chip that comes with a new Oryon CPU, is a second generation chipset specially designed for smartphones.

Unlike simply using the same CPU found in their laptop chips, Qualcomm developed a new version tailored for mobile devices, offering improved performance and efficiency over the previous Kryo CPUs used in older mobile chips.

The company promises that the chip will enhance faster performance and includes on-device support for multimodal AI.

The Oryon CPU in the 8 Elite is a second-generation chip, replacing the Kryo CPUs in earlier mobile chips.

The chip consists of two prime cores and six performance cores, an X80 5G modem-RF chip, and an Adreno GPU with a new sliced architecture, each slice having its own dedicated memory.

Chris Patrick, Qualcomm’s mobile handset SVP, has clearly stated that this recent hardware upgrade focuses on providing a desktop-like experience on smartphones.

With its help the websites that are not optimized for mobile phones will load quickly and graphic intensive games will run smoothly, making the chipset blend into the background.

The 8 Elite also includes NPU upgrades with the Hexagon NPU. This supports on-device AI assistants that can handle both text and visuals.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset has an AI-powered video object eraser tool. This feature allows users to remove unwanted objects or elements from their videos.

However, the effectiveness of the chipset can be properly assessed only after using it in smartphones.

The Samsung Galaxy S25 is expected to be one of the first phones to implement this feature, so we need to wait and see how the features work after real application.

Snapdragon 8 Elite is expected t be launched by early next year. However, companies like Asus, Honor, OnePlus, Oppo, and Xiaomi are likely to show off their new devices with this chip soon.
