Microsoft is set to introduce a significant update for Windows 11 users, allowing them to customize the Copilot key on their keyboards.
This Copilot key, which has been shipping on new laptops and keyboards, is currently configured to launch Microsoft’s Copilot app by default.
However, the company is now testing a feature that will enable users to reassign this key to launch other applications.
The new customization options are part of a beta build of Windows 11, available to testers.
According to the Windows Insider team, users can choose to have the Copilot key launch any app that is MSIX packaged and signed, ensuring that the app meets security and privacy standards.
Until a user selects a different app, the key will continue to launch the Copilot app on devices where it is installed.
This update marks the first major change to Windows keyboards in 30 years and is part of Microsoft’s effort to encourage users to try its AI assistant. Earlier this year, new Copilot Plus PCs began shipping with the Copilot key.
However, the latest 24H2 update to Windows 11 has transitioned Copilot into a web app, reducing its integration with Windows settings. This means users can no longer use the AI assistant to control settings like dark mode.
The customization feature for the Copilot key is expected to be available to all Windows 11 users in the coming months, following its beta testing phase.
