Previously, Google’s Pixel lineup offered a flagship “Pro” phone with top-notch features and a smaller, more affordable base model. However, recent leaks from OnLeaks and 91Mobiles suggest a significant shift in strategy for the upcoming Pixel 9 series.
In January, renders by OnLeaks hinted at a significant change. Previously, the base Pixel had two cameras, while the Pro sported three.
This showcased a large and a small phone, each with three cameras. This suggested a significant upgrade for the base model, turning it into a “mini-Pro” with premium features in a compact size.
New renders from OnLeaks and 91Mobiles reveal a third Pixel 9 – the standard, smaller model with the expected two cameras. This seemingly confirms a three-pronged Pixel 9 lineup. These are –
Pixel 9 Pro XL: 6.8 inches
Pixel 9 Pro: 6.1 inches
Pixel 9: 6.0 inches
The base Pixel 9 retains the design elements seen in other leaks, including the rounded pill-shaped camera bar, iPhone-inspired flat metal sides, and curved corners on both the display & on the phone body.
This news comes amid Google’s existing Pixel “a” series, which currently features the Pixel 7a alongside the discounted Pixel 6a. The Pixel Fold includes six phones in Google’s current lineup.
The overlap between the “a” series and the base Pixel models has been a concern.
The Pixel 7a and Pixel 8 share similar screen size, storage, RAM, and even camera and CPU performance in real-world use.
The main differentiator is a $200 price tag, which needs to be revised to justify the jump for some users. The upcoming Pixel 8a is expected to undercut the Pixel 8’s price, which might completely overshadow Google’s base Pixel sales.
It’s important to remember that these leaks are early. The Pixel 8a launch is expected in May, with the Pixel 9 series likely arriving in October.
However, these leaks offer a glimpse into Google’s potential strategy for revamping the Pixel series. With three distinct Pixel 9 models and a potential streamlining of the “a” series, Google could aim to provide clearer options across different price points and features.
